No, not that Don Giovanni. As part of its summer showcase the COC presents a double bill of new productions, pairing Giuseppe Gazzaniga’s take on the story of the legendary Spanish cad with Igor Stravinsky’s dark and boisterous farmyard burlesque, Renard (1916). Gazzaniga’s Don Giovanni, which predates the infinitely more famous 1787 Mozart version by nine months, was actually an inspiration for Wolfgang Amadeus’ librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte. Stravinsky’s work is based on Russian folk tales and calls for a cast of animals: a fox, cat, ram and cock—who, in the manner of Don Giovanni, boasts his prowess with the hens. Steven Philcox conducts Don Giovanni, while Derek Bate presides over Renard; the stage directors are Tom Diamond and Serge Bennethan, respectively. Cast members—vocalists from the Ensemble Studio—include tenors Adam Luther and Michael Barrett, as well as bass-baritone Andrew Stewart and baritone Justin Welsh. — Rick MacMillan
