This marriage of music and images—designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of late French composer Olivier Messiaen—explores the effects of synesthesia, the merging of the senses that enables a select few to equate colours with specific sounds. Drawing on Messiaen’s own accounts of how musical chords summoned specific hues in his mind’s eye, the Gryphon Trio joins clarinetist James Campbell for a performance of the composer’s transcendent Quartet for the End of Time, which he created in 1941 while interned in a German POW camp. The piece is accompanied by a visual display designed by Bernard White, and preceded by a lecture on synesthesia and its links to the performing and visual arts. — Rick MacMillan
