Soprano Monica Whicher, tenor Michael Colvin and baritone Brett Polegato join Aldeburgh’s co-artistic directors, pianists Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Austrian lieder master Hugo Wolf. The program is built around various recurring themes in Wolf’s life and work: the natural world, love, religion and philosophy; the lure of the south (featuring his string quartet Italian Serenade, arranged for piano duet); Wolf and Wagner; the spirit world; and humour. Included are excerpts from his song cycles Mörike-Lieder, Spanisches Liederbuch, Eichendorff-Lieder, Goethe-Lieder and Italienisches Liederbuch.—Rick MacMillan
