Z'otz Collective

Like many young creatives in this city, Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano, and Ilyana Martinez—the Z’otz Collective—make art in the vein of the Royal Art Lodge. Their naively rendered anthropomorphic figures come from weekly sessions reminiscent of child’s play: each member elaborates on the labours of their peers, an act inspired by the Surrealist parlour game Exquisite Corpse. Z’otz’s singularity comes from its ethnic makeup; all of its members have Latin American roots—“Z’otz” is Mayan for “bat”—the symbologies of which can show up in their drawings. Artwork $500–$2,000.—David Balzer
