The World Washi Summit

  • Various Locations
International washi enthusiasts—those who make Japanese paper, distribute it, use it in their work and collect it—converge on Toronto for a nine-day summit, the first of its kind. In addition to the many planned demonstrations, lectures and workshops, 35 galleries and venues will house work that in some way incorporates washi. Loop Gallery members present Flex, a show concerned with one of the issues most pressing to summit organizers: the sustainability of the craft itself, in light of its dwindling number of contemporary Japanese practitioners. Artwork $30–$5,000. Workshops $25–$55.—David Balzar
