Sunil Gupta

The beautiful and compassionate 1980s photographic series Exiles lifted the veil on gay life in Delhi, where male homosexuality remains illegal, a hangover from British colonial law. Sunil Gupta’s latest series is called Mr. Malhotra’s Party, a fictional name that refers to gay nights at clubs, ostensibly deemed private events to skirt the ban. Gupta casts his subjects—who now no longer convene strictly in parks due to the development of the Internet—as guests of the titular mister’s imagined parties, shooting them always in the centre of the frame, with the wonderful chaos of urban life and architecture behind them.—David Balzer
