The arguable hotbed of contemporary Chinese art, Shanghai is in love with conceptualism and new media (as best evinced, perhaps, by its skyline). Shanghai Kaleidoscope, guest curated by Christopher Phillips of New York’s International Center for Photography, presents a wide range of videos, photos, and even fashion apparel from the vibrant metropolis. There are additional, non-native perspectives, especially of the city’s architectural landscape: Italian artist Olivo Barbieri’s film, Site Specific Shanghai 04: A Silent Story (2004), shows the drastic boom in construction; similarly, ex-Vancouverite Greg Girard presents a digital display of striking photographs tracking demolition and development.
