His sculptures are about sculpture itself: its meaning in the contemporary world, and the politics and pratfalls of its construction. (How, for instance, does the art form change in a society that is absolutely dependent on the use of synthetic, cheaply made materials?) They are also about associations, with titles whose meanings can be peeled back several times—an older piece, Washington Square, references the New York park, the Henry James novel and Mondrian’s paintings. Lyall’s solo show at the Power Plant centres on these concerns, culminating in a site-specific piece commissioned by the gallery. Artwork not for sale.—David Balzer
