New Yorker photographer Robert Polidori, who was born in Montreal, tends toward rigorous philosophical studies of objects, be they buildings or, as is the case with his latest series on Versailles, historicist flummery. Polidori has spent over two decades at the famous imperial residence, taking shots of its perpetual restoration; he calls it “an Anglo-Saxon fantasy of 18th-century French culture.” Polidori’s view of Versailles is rather aloof; the goal is to penetrate its touristy proscenium. Artwork $23,000–$28,000.—David Balzer
