RICHARD JOHNSON

Who needs air-conditioning when you have Johnson’s austere photographs of far-north ice-fishing huts to keep you cool? Set against white expanses and grey skies, and framed head-on, the huts are most memorable as blocks of colour; many of the works vaguely recall Kenneth Noland paintings. Johnson’s study of the huts is also a field guide to their eccentricities. Each cabin bears the mark of its maker, a comment on the intrinsic relationship between necessity and creativity. Artwork $750–$1,800.—David Balzer
