Mayhem

Nicolas Metivier Gallery gives the perfunctory summer group show a hilariously forthright name, Mayhem, allowing it to complement the subject matter on display. And no one in the show fits this designation better than painter Rachel MacFarlane, whose bold, garish paintings—think ’70s and ’80s surrealist and sci-fi art—are riffs on maquettes made of junk. Also on view are Martin Bureau’s weird paintings influenced by digital surveillance images. Photographers Carlos and Jason Sanchez round things out with their cinematic-slash-religious allegories of contemporary life. Artwork $950–$24,000.—David Balzer
