Junko Mizuno

This Japanese illustrator’s style is loosely based on shojo manga—manga for young girls—but her artwork treads overtly perverse territory that separates it from the cutesy and the primly fetishistic. Think Rainbow Brite in soft porn and on acid: in one of Mizuno’s drawings, a pink-haired lady (who looks like she just stepped out of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) frolics in bed with a gooey, roach-infested mummy. Mizuno’s new exhibit at Narwhal Art Projects, her solo premiere in this country, consists of “a new body of paintings loosely inspired by a well-loved Canadian classic.” Brace yourselves, Anne Shirley fans. Artwork price TBA.
