When she attended the Alberta College of Art in the 1960s, Joni Mitchell was disenchanted with her instructors’ fervent love of then trendy post-painterly abstraction, and vowed to follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh and O’Keeffe. Painting has been her most beloved métier over the years—her commitment to music has waxed and waned—though her devotion to paint hasn’t stopped her from the occasional foray into multimedia and, yes, abstraction. Green Flag Song is her latest project, a series of photographic triptychs taken of images appearing on her broken television. The palette created by the TV is of sickly green-yellows and pinks, and the fuzzy images—of dictators and their crowds, of skulls and soldiers, of old Hollywood films—make for a dizzying, terrifying view of our species. It’s what William Blake would call the Human Abstract. Artwork not for sale.—David Balzar
