Best known for writing and illustrating such children’s books as Merry Ever After, the 89-year-old Lasker renders country houses and harbours in bright and gauzy oils. Hearkening back to impressionism, the works aren’t fashionable, though they do fetch high prices and please crowds: the painter’s pieces have appeared at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago. Artwork $4,000–$20,000. —David Balzer
