Jeff Thomas

Jeff Thomas presents two shows at this year’s edition of Contact, Toronto’s annual citywide photography festival: Drive By—A Road Trip With Jeff Thomas (held by the University of Toronto Art Centre) and Jeff Thomas: Don’t Mess With the Pediment (held at the Stephen Bulger Gallery). Thomas is part of a new group of Aboriginal artists—K. C. Adams, Lori Blondeau, Kent Monkman—who use humour, including passé stereotypes, as a method of dealing with the colonial past. His work at Stephen Bulger speaks to his interest in documenting statues and other depictions of “Indianness” across North America; the UTAC exhibit includes Indians on Tour, for which Thomas photographed plastic Native figurines at various sites around the world. Artwork not for sale. May 1 to June 28. University of Toronto Art Centre. Artwork $1,200–$5,000. May 3 to June 7. Stephen Bulger Gallery.—David Balzer
