The latest show at the neat new Parkdale gallery 47—located in an alleyway—builds on the gallery’s mandate of having artists and viewers interact with the unique facets of their space. A cabinet designer and furniture maker by trade, D. B. Johnson turns 47’s interior and yard into a series of vignettes composed of sticks, sand, dirt and plastic figurines. With its hordes of toy soldiers, the installation recalls commemorative dioramas, as well as acts of mock combat, drawing attention to the ways in which the human condition is mirrored through what is often dismissed as child’s play.
