Craft is often construed as a folk practice, positioned miles away from any kind of zeitgeist. Close to You explodes that idea, using the artwork of Ai Kijima, Scott Kildall, Allyson Mitchell, Mark Newport and Michèle Provost to demonstrate how craft can act as social, political and cultural criticism. Newport, for instance, uses knitting to investigate tropes of masculinity. His bodysuits—noticeably DIY and arguably deformed recreations of superhero and sports uniforms—are mostly displayed on hangers, making flaccid the arms, legs and torsos that are, as per comic books and trading cards, typically hulking.
