CHALLENGING TRADITIONS

Subtitled Contemporary First Nations Art of the Northwest Coast, this exhibit displays over 70 works by 40 artists working within the ever-evolving Pacific idiom. Curated by Ian Thom, senior curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Challenging Traditions shows old practices being subtly recast through new materials. Bill Henderson’s striking Sun Mask, for instance, is made of yellow cedar, cedar bark rope and acrylic paint. To Sept. 20. The McMichael Gallery’s other summer offerings include an exhibition of Charles Pachter’s hand-printed serigraph illustrations of Margaret Atwood’s The Journals of Susanna Moodie (July 18 to Oct. 10); and Diana Thorneycroft’s Canada, Myth and History, the Winnipeg multimedia artist’s satirical examination of the Group of Seven’s legacy (July 18 to Nov. 29). Artwork not for sale.—David Balzer
