Biliana Velkova

A multidisciplinary artist, Velkova addresses issues of consumerism, complacency and femininity in her work. In previous performances, she has had photos taken at Sears after having her makeup done at various cosmetic counters in the style of each brand’s ad campaign (see a shot of Velkova as the open-lipped, droopy-eyed, bow tie–sporting Yves Saint Laurent model), and camped it up in a superhero outfit in Blockbuster and Toys R Us parking lots. Her new series—more recreations of desire-inducing images from marketing campaigns—for the Convenience storefront gallery comes just in time for the holidays. Artwork not for sale.—David Balzer
