Worth the Drive
It ain’t pretty, but Mississauga’s Dundas strip has some of the best deals
Royal Ontario Museum
1. Trutone Electronics
Sony, Hitachi, Samsung, Denon, Yamaha and Panasonic: all the heavy hitters in home theatre gear are sold at this 8,000-square-foot showroom, where prices are 10 to 15 per cent off retail. Big spenders (easy when a home theatre system can set you back $50,000) can negotiate a package deal and expect a few extras thrown in, too. Demo rooms are comfortably appointed with leather recliners and tricked out with the latest and greatest gadgetry. 980 Dundas St. E., 905-270-3440.
2. Baby Cribs
What this ambience-free shop lacks in ahh-inspiring displays it more than makes up for in deals. Cribs (there are 54 styles
to choose from) are made in Canada and the prices, which are 10 to 15 per cent below regular retail, include a mattress and taxes. A simple crib in white or natural wood is $199, while fancy sleigh styles and convertible (crib to bed) models range from $399 to $799. Bassinets start at $59, glider chairs at $199. 1185 Dundas St. E., 905-803-9689.
3. End of the Roll
Towering roll ends of berber, sisal and shag carpet share floor space with dozens of industrial-size rolls of broadloom; the latter can be cut to fit any size room. As the name suggests, much
of the selection consists of remnants or ends of lines, but all are top-notch. Carpets start at 69 cents per square foot—at least
20 per cent cheaper than you’ll find elsewhere for similar quality. Laminate flooring, starting
at 99 cents per square foot, is another good buy. Installation is charged separately. 1825 Dundas St. E., 905-602-7702.
4. Mattress City
You’ll find the same name brands here—Sealy, Simmons, King Koil, Tempur-pedic and Serta—that you’d find at the big chain stores, but without the double-digit markup. The sales staff seems genuinely concerned with helping customers find the right bed in their price range. The competition is hawkishly monitored, so they’ll match advertised prices without question. For serious savings, look for factory one-offs or consider a no-name mattress; you can get a decent quality queen-size set for about $350. 1911 Dundas St. E., 905-624-9999.
5. Kultur Flooring
You won’t find laminate, ceramic or broadloom at this hardwood-only depot. A family-run operation from
top to bottom—they even own the mill where the planks are made—means factory pricing. For as little as $2.99 per square foot, less than the price of a lot of laminate flooring, you’ll get a knotty, cottage-style wood floor; five-inch-wide maple planks begin at $6 per square foot. Installation is approximately $2 per square foot. 2050 Dundas St. E., 905-566-0399.
6. Pier One Clearance Outlet
Discontinued items, leftovers and marked-down goods from Pier One stores across Ontario are consolidated at this well-organized location. Prices are at least
35 per cent off, and often 50 per cent or more. Shop
on a Friday when the selection is best and there are
unadvertised spot sales: on one visit, area rugs and lighting were an extra 50 per cent off the last ticketed price. 2130 Dundas St. E., 905-270-5737.
