The List
Will Alsop
Ten things the architect Will Alsop—famous for his outré OCAD addition, and now a visiting prof at Ryerson—can’t live without
My Cohibas
Cohiba Robusto cigars are the perfect size—fat but not too long. I discovered them in Moscow in the early ’90s, when I had an office there.
A hug from Kyle Rae
Who else would you want to be hugged by? I love his enthusiasm for culture and for Toronto. He makes me laugh.
My signature vintage
I designed the label for the wine Château Siran Margaux 1990. My first question when the vintners called was, “Well, who else has designed labels for you?” They said Miró, and I said, “OK, sign me up.” The wine is excellent. I drink it when my wife, Sheila, has gone to bed so I don’t have to share.
My morning routine
I start each day with a half‑kilometre swim at the Four Seasons, then breakfast at the Park Hyatt. In England, I always have bacon and eggs, but the bacon here is crap, so I order eggs, toast, sausage, coffee and tomato juice.
New city hall
It’s an extremely good example of late modernist architecture. When it was commissioned in the ’50s, it was a brave and visionary choice.
New underwear
There’s something luxurious about taking new underwear out of the packaging and putting them on. I wear black Marks and Spencer briefs. They’re well made and affordable.
My pen
This Montblanc was a present from my wife 22 years ago. I like a broad nib. It’s really just an expensive ballpoint, but you can write the most beautiful love letter in the world with it. And it’s great on a plane with a smallish sketchbook. I do a lot of dreaming with my pen.
A drink at the Park Hyatt
The Roof Lounge is like stepping into 1957. They haven’t fucked it up. The barman, Joe, knows my drink before I reach the bar: a large Lagavulin malt whisky, no ice, with water on the side.
Bespoke menswear
I go to GreenShag (670 Queen St. W., 416-360-7424), where there’s a process: you sit down with the owners, and they’ll give you a beer while you go through boxes of fabrics and discuss colour, cut, bib.
They also gave me cufflinks with images of the OCAD building on them. I love to wear myself.
My English shoes
I have a lot of shoes, because I have a rule about never wearing the same pair two days running. You have to rest the leather for 24 hours, and if you wear the same shoes too often, your feet get bored. My favourites are Church’s leather lace-ups. I have a couple of pairs, one of which I bought in 1977 and still wear.

New underwear out of the packaging? Well, I think this is something that ladies do not do. Got to wash them first! Socks, on the other hand, are great when freshly bought.
