CLAM BAKE AND CORN ROAST WITH JAMIE KENNEDY
Celeb chef Jamie Kennedy brings a little of the East Coast to the city at his Corktown cafe. Usually only open for brekkie and lunch, Kennedy extends Gilead’s hours this Saturday to dish up steamer clams, charcoal-grilled corn, chilled tomato soup, Kennedy’s famous fries, freshly baked artisan bread, peach crumble and vanilla ice cream on the patio. BLACK CREEK PIONEER FESTIVAL
Head back in time with this annual historical fest, now in its 53rd year. Not just a throwback to the 1800s, it’s also an exercise in nostalgia for parents who spent many an elementary school field trip making apple cider, watching candle dipping demos and marveling over the old school threads. September 19. $15. Black Creek Pioneer Village, 1000 Murray Ross Parkway, 416-736-1733, blackcreek.ca.
GREEN PORNO: SCANDALOUS SEA (FREE!)
These short flicks are Isabella Rossellini’s second foray into the world of animal lovin’. This time around, Rossellini takes on the sex lives of squid, barnacles and whales in the one- and two-minute films, part of a free TIFF installation at the ROM. It ends this weekend, so be sure to check out the shorts and the exhibit, which features paper models used in the films, before everything comes to an end. Until September 20. Royal Ontario Museum, 100 Queen’s Park, 416-586-8000, rom.on.ca.
TORONTO PSYCHIC EXPO Skeptics will want to skip this one. Tarot card readers, numerologists, practitioners of palmistry and astrologists are at Exhibition Place this weekend to chat about their craft and, more importantly, tell the future. Readings aren’t included in the admission, so grab that wallet and head downtown to find out if tall, dark and handsome is in the cards, or the love line or the numbers. September 18–20. $10. Queen Elizabeth Building, Exhibition Place, 190 Princes’ Blvd., 416-425-4827, esp888.com.
TORONTO UKRAINIAN FESTIVAL (FREE!)
This Bloor West Village festival can still be considered a summertime event, but only just. Catch performances by Ukrainian folk rockers Haydamaky, traditional dance troupes and the “bad boys of polka,” Kavalery Band. Also on offer, art, shopping and authentic Ukrainian nibbles. September 18–20. Bloor Street, between Jane St. and Runnymede Rd., 416-410-9965, ukrainianfestival.com.
MIMI, OR A POISONER’S COMEDY
France’s most infamous serial killer, the marquise de Brinvilliers, offed (or attempted to off) her husband, siblings and father with the help of her lover. One of history’s few female serial killers, the real-life Marquise was beheaded. Did we mention this Allen Cole-penned musical is a comedy? September 15–October 25. $19–$38. Tarragon Theatre, 30 Bridgman Ave., 416-531-1827, tarragontheatre.com.
THE RATED R SHOW (FREE!)
It’s a scandalous weekend here in Toronto. Just as the sea creature porn installation wraps up at the ROM, this art show opens. Curated by comic artists Mara Sternberg and Eric Kim, the show features the work of 14 other illustrators, photographers and artists, all of whom tackle subject matter film boards deems “adult.” Check out Madison Cawker’s shudder-worthy documentary short on flesh hook suspension, which is only on the bill for Friday’s opening gala, and Kyla Vanderklugt’s triptych of paintings depicting the oft-bloody ends to ruling dynasties throughout history. September 18–October 1. The Art Bar, Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W., 416-531-4635, ratedrshow.com.
