The Weekender
Half of Toronto has packed up and headed for the hills (or at least Muskoka). We’ve dug up eight clever ways to enjoy the city while we have it to ourselves By Stacy Lee Kong

1. ARTS AT THE HEART
The official start of the season is still a couple of weeks away, but with the temperature climbing above 30 this weekend, it might as well be summer. Take advantage of the warm weather at the artisan market in Yonge-Dundas Square. Friday 5 p.m.–10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sunday noon–7 p.m., www.ydsquare.ca.
2. TORONTO NOIR
Mystery lovers, grab your trench coat for this sneak peek at the latest offerings from Peter Robinson (of the Inspector Banks series) and Andrew Pyper (The Killing Circle) at this evening reading. June 6, 7 p.m. Free. World’s Biggest Book Store, 20 Edward St. (at Yonge), 416-977-7009.
3. LOWER HIGHLAND CREEK PARK
Spanning wetlands, ravines and mature forests, this park is a great place for nature lovers to enjoy a picnic or a leisurely stroll. You may catch Ontario’s provincial flower, the trillium, which is nearing the end of its season; few Torontonians ever see it in the city, but they’re plentiful here, as are hemlocks, red oaks, pines and maples. Free. Lawrence Ave. E. (at Overture Rd.).
4. SECOND ANNUAL CUBAN FILM FESTIVAL
Launched last year to raise funds in support of the Cuban Five, who have spent the past 10 years in American prisons on charges of conspiracy, this five-day festival promises to be unapologetically pro-Cuba and undeniably thought-provoking. June 6 to 10. Suggested donation $5–$10. Greek Canadian Democratic Organization, 290 Danforth Ave. (at Broadview), 416-603-9858, www.canadiannetworkoncuba.ca/Upcoming_Events.html.
5. BIKER BREAKFAST
In the spirit of Bike Month, eco-friendly retailer Grassroots is offering a free breakfast—organic fruit, juice, baked goods and fair-trade coffee—for commuter cyclists at its Bloor Street location. June 6, 8 a.m.–9:30 a.m. Free. Grassroots, 408 Bloor St. W. (at Brunswick Ave.), 416-944-1993, www.grassrootsstore.com.
6. SAMBA FAMZ
The Drum Artz Community Centre hosts an afternoon of drumming, crafts, dancing and singing for kids three and up. Isn’t it better when the banging and screaming isn’t happening in your house? June 7, 2 p.m.–4 p.m. $20 for adult and accompanying child. Drum Artz Community Centre, 27 Primrose Ave. (at Davenport Rd.), 416-538-6342, www.drumartz.com.
7. TORONTO ROLLER DERBY LEAGUE
If you missed the first game of the season two weeks ago, make sure you catch this week’s battle, when the Death Track Dolls play the Bay Street Bruisers. June 7, 8 p.m. $10 in advance; $15 at the door. George Bell Arena, 215 Ryding Ave. (at Runnymede), www.torontorollerderby.com.
8. YASI’S RIDE-IN OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT
Forget the drive-in; this movie night at Yasi’s Place (in the Bloor-Lansdowne area) encourages cyclists to ride to the screenings—all of which are bicycle themed. Catch The Triplets of Belleville and award-winning international shorts, projected onto the side of a building across the street. June 7, 8:30 p.m.–11 p.m. Free. Yasi’s Place, 299 Wallace Ave. (at Lansdowne), 416-536-9888, www.yasisplace.ca.
Other events to check out this weekend:
• Hugely popular Woofstock doggy festival at Berczy Park
• Joni Mitchell’s photographic triptychs at CTV Queen Street
• Luminato’s free concert at Yonge-Dundas Square, featuring the Count Basie Orchestra
• Soulpepper’s Uncle Vanya, Chekhov’s 1899 play about wasted opportunities
