The Weekender: August 8–10

Have a sanctioned water fight, learn to DJ, then gorge at a food festival. How to pack fun into the dog days of summer By Stacy Lee Kong

Krinos Taste of the Danforth runs all weekend
Krinos Taste of the Danforth runs all weekend

1. WATER FIGHT (FREE!)
This just might be Ontario’s biggest water fight. Head to Christie Pits for a throwback to the good ol’ days, when a Saturday afternoon was best spent waging war with water guns, balloons and, if all else failed, the hose. We don’t know if it will be Guinness record worthy, but it sure sounds fun. Aug. 9, 2 p.m.–3 p.m. Christie Pits Park, 750 Bloor St. W., funtoronto@gmail.com.

2. 5X4
Twenty performers interact with household objects—and each other—in this large-scale art installation. The show is an effort to demonstrate each individual’s role in an intricate system; audience members are free to browse at will, deciding who, when and how long to watch. Aug. 8, 8:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. $5–$10. CineCycle (the coach house behind 129 Spadina Ave.), 416-576-9322, fivebyfourproject@gmail.com.

3. A MUSICAL CALLED ROBIN HOOD
Presented by members of Toronto Youth Theatre’s summer program, this wild and wacky spin on the story of Robin and his merry men features chipmunk ballerinas and several other non-traditional elements. Aug. 8, 7:30 p.m.; Aug. 9, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. $30. Young Centre for the Performing Arts, 55 Mill St., Bldg. 49, 416-866-8666, www.youngcentre.ca.

4. EVERYONE’S A DJ (FREE!)
Those who fancy themselves the next Jam Master Jay or Samantha Ronson make sure to attend this monthly party hosted by local DJ Matt Blair. Sixteen DJs—old pros, rookies and a handful who’ve never spun before—share the stage at this Saturday night showdown. Expect old-school hip hop and maybe a little heavy house in the mix. Aug. 9, 9 p.m. Disgraceland, 965 Bloor St. W., www.mattblair.ca.

5. WORLD LITERACY OF CANADA BOOK SALE (FREE!)
This annual book sale, now in its 25th year, is the perfect way to pick up your next read on the cheap. Canadian publishers donate thousands of books to WLC every year, which are then sold at seriously discounted prices. Aug. 10, 10–5. Yonge-Dundas Square, www.worldlit.ca.

6. STAR PARTY (FREE!)
Go back to the original meaning of stargazing at this kid-friendly night. Scope out the constellations using the science centre’s telescopes (weather permitting) and enjoy music, stories and astronomy displays. Aug. 8, 9 p.m.–11 p.m. Ontario Science Centre, 770 Don Mills Rd., 416-696-1000, www.ontariosciencecentre.ca.

7. OPEN SCREENING UNDER THE STARS
There are tons of open-air movie screenings in the city this summer, but none quite like this. Here, attendees supply 10-minute clips of their favourite films, home videos, music videos, whatever. Aug. 9, 9 p.m.–midnight. PWYC. 401 Richmond St. W., courtyard, 416-656-5577, www.pdome.org.
