1. THE HARLETTES PRESENT FUN IN THE SUN
Join these local burlesque babes for their latest sizzling summer blowout. They’ll be breaking out some of their favourite numbers, in addition to new performances sure to heat up the last of the lazy, hazy days of summer. 2. BALLET IN THE PARK (FREE!)
Pack up the lawn chairs and head to Étienne Brûlé Park for Ballet Jörgen Canada’s outdoor production of Romeo and Juliet. If the kids are in tow, the earlier showings of The Emperor’s New Clothes are a better bet. 3. GOLDEN TAP AWARDS (FREE!)
Beer lovers indulge at this celebration of the best of Ontario’s craft breweries, pubs and bars. Awards for best bar, best microbrewery and best beer highlight traditional brewers, including such local outfits as Steam Whistle and Mill Street Brewery. 4. ZINE DREAM
Alterna-press-lovin’ Torontonians unite. With over 40 local artists and zinesters to chat with, music and performances to enjoy, plenty of reading material and a bake sale, it’s an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon. 5. WHIPPERSNAPPER SUMMER SHOWCASE (FREE!)
Catch the best and brightest of up-and-coming Ontario talent at this artists’ showcase. Over 20 young artists will display their work—paintings, multimedia works and photos—at this two-week showcase. 6. AFRIVILLAGE FEST (FREE!)
Short of hopping on a plane at Pearson, Bloor Street is the place to go for quality African fare, and this weekend’s food fest is a sure way to get a fix. Featuring live performances, a fashion show and tasty treats from local restaurants, this is a must for Toronto foodies. August 23 and 24, 10–10. Bloor St. W. 7. TOTALLY TUBULAR ’80S FILM FESTIVAL
The ’80s get a bad rap for big hair and bad fashion, but at the very least, a lot of memorable films came out of the decade. Fox Theatre will screen its faves in this week-long tribute. This weekend’s lineup includes Ghostbusters (Saturday), Dirty Dancing (Sunday) and John Hughes’ hits Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club (Friday) and Sixteen Candles (Sunday), among others.
