There’s Something About Malin
The Toronto actor is suddenly everywhere. No complaints
OK, fine. Technically she was born in Stockholm, not Toronto. Though that shouldn’t come as a big surprise: the white-blonde mane, the piercing blue eyes, the body that looks like it was created at a convention for 15-year-old boys. Still, we can’t help but feel ownership of Malin Akerman. The Maxim cover girl and heir apparent to Cameron Diaz’s cool-chick throne spent her teenage years in Toronto. (As legend has it, her awkward stage at North Toronto CI culminated with a single pimple on an otherwise impeccable face.) Since heading to Hollywood in 2001, our girl has been stealing scenes in movies—The Heartbreak Kid, 27 Dresses—that might otherwise be deemed unwatchable. Now, following a lead role in The Watchmen, she’s scored a place on the A-list. This month, the actress stars alongside Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell in Couples Retreat, a tropical island comedy by Swingers funny guys Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn. With three other films scheduled to hit theatres next year, it won’t be long before the whole world feels like they know Malin Akerman. But we had her first. Er, make that second.
