Smashing Pumpkins

Pumpkin pie, as traditional a dessert as they come, still comes in all shapes and sizes. Our food editor taste-tests five of the city’s best-known By Chris Nuttall-Smith

Where: The Queen of Tarts, 283 Roncesvalles Ave., 416-651-3009.
How much: $16.
The take: “Gorgeous, flaky pastry. A classic that respects tradition, but goes a step further without going over the top. Beautiful to look at.”

Where: Senses Bakery and Café, 318 Wellington St. W., 416-961-0055.
How much: $26.50.
The take: “Definitely not your Grandma’s pie. The most beautiful-looking tart you can imagine, with chunks of whole pumpkin, garnished with candied pepitas and orange peel. You eat it with your eyes.”

Where: Ed’s Real Scoop, 2224 Queen St. E., 416-699-6100.
How much: $17.
The take: “An ice cream pie that’s a nice, different take. Tastes like traditional pie, but doesn’t feel like it in the mouth. A good, basic, crumbly, graham wafer crust. If you have kids, it’ll be a hit.”

Where: Daniel et Daniel, 248 Carlton St., 416-968-9275.
How much: $28.75.
The take: “ Good, although nothing incredible. The scallop-edged crust is pretty. Not quite satisfying; too much whipped cream on top.”

Where: Wanda’s Pie-in-the-Sky, 7A Yorkville Ave., 416-925-7437.
How much: $13.50.
The take: “The pastry is almost bready, with no flakiness. Kind of boring—not much pumpkin flavour, not much spice.”
