How to shed post-holiday poundage without taking out a second mortgage

PILATES FOR LIFE
Strengthening core muscles may sound like torture, but this studio, run by veteran instructor Amy Brown, is far from intimidating. Every Friday in January, the Karma class incorporates resistance bands and weighted balls in exercises aimed at toning abs and increasing flexibility. The class is open to all levels, so don’t worry if you don’t know the difference between a plank and a vertical crunch. Mats provided free of charge. PWYC. 27 Yorkville Ave., 416-922-0387.

GET SPUN
For downtowners craving a cycling fix without the slush, Christie Ness’s stylishly spartan boutique gym specializes in high-energy classes. Twenty Schwinn Evolutions are configured in a pack-like formation, but with space for everyone to breathe and sweat in their own bubble. Music varies by instructor; expect everything from hard rock to old-school hip hop. First class $5. 129 Spadina Ave., 416-850‑0843.

JUDY'S GROUP FITNESS
Few gyms in the city offer the opportunity to beat someone up in an organized class setting. At Judy’s, that someone is BOB. Short for Body Opponent Blocker, 40 of these chiselled rubber men take a barrage of blows and kicks to the face and abdomen, all in the name of cardio conditioning. Owner Judy Romantini is a softie at heart, however, so one-hour classes include dance interludes and stretch sessions. The net result: cheaper than a shrink, better than Prozac. Unlimited monthly pass $167. 3768 Bathurst St., Ste. 302, 416-398-3131.

ZUMBA
Get into the groove during this non-stop cardio dance sweat-a-thon. Zumba—a mashup of salsa, hip hop, belly dancing and any other style that involves hip swivelling, booty shaking and arm flailing—requires little more than the ability to laugh at yourself. $138 for 10 classes. Jan. 19 to March 23. Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, 750 Spadina Ave., 416-924-6211.
