A massive downtown demonstration by Tamil protestors stops traffic, not war

The March 16 protest, which brought out Tamil Canadians by the thousands and ground the downtown core to a halt, was the second so far in 2009. The goal: to call attention to the Sri Lankan civil war, hoping that Canada (home to the largest Tamil population outside of Sri Lanka) will support a ceasefire. The method: a human chain stretching from Front to Bloor and Yonge to University. The outcome: thousands of cranky drivers and transit riders. The city may not be any more unified on Sri Lankan politics, but hatred of traffic jams is a cause just about every Torontonian can get behind.
