Two society balls duke it out for social supremacy By Emer Connon
On back-to-back Thursdays, Toronto’s fête set came out in support of their social lives, er, make that their favourite causes. The Power Ball—now in its 10th year and under fire for getting too tony for the “real” arts community (i.e., the people who make art, not the ones who can afford to buy it)—was, as usual, an exercise in outré hipness, starring a smattering of drunken pandas and nipple tassels among the cornucopia of installations. A week later, the second annual Innovators’ Ball brought a who’s who of Shinan Govani name-drops all the way out to the scenic pastures of the Science Centre. Toronto’s urban elite at Don Mills and Eglinton! What better proof that the upstart soirée is officially the bash to beat?
