Five things they can’t survive the season without By Amy Verner

A taste of Sweden
I always do a run to IKEA to buy their thin gingersnaps. I don’t own a car, and getting there is a big production. So I stock up; I’ll buy six tins in the special Christmas packaging.
Cat-friendly tree trimming
I love tinsel, but I avoid it because my cats eat it, resulting in very sad and sick kitties and a huge vet bill. As an alternative, my best friend Wendy comes over and we make paper chains.
A cold-shielding coat
I need a coat that will allow me to be in denial about the cold. Even when it’s minus 40, I want to feel like I’m in the Bahamas on a hot day. Aritzia (280 Queen St. W., 416-977‑9919) has Wilfred coats that don’t make you look like a Michelin man.
Christmas sweaters
My brother and I go to Kensington Market to find the ugliest Christmas sweater ever. Then I’ll wear it to work just to see my co-workers struggle to find something nice to say about it.
Non-Christmas music
I don’t like Christmas music, and we get bombarded with it for the entire season. When I have to do Christmasy things, I make a Christmas playlist of all my favourite songs of the year. This year, Kanye’s “Stronger” will definitely be on it, and Tegan and Sara’s The Con.
