New Year’s Guide: Dinners
Four mouth-watering menus at the city’s swankiest venues By Laura Trethewey
L’Unità
Marben
This King West resto-lounge has been wowing the condo crowd with its sleek interior and sophisticated cuisine for about a year. For this night, expect the six-course menu to include grilled chateaubriand and molten chocolate cake. The house DJ takes over late-night festivities, which naturally lead to a midnight champagne toast to the beautiful people.
Where: 488 Wellington St. W. (at Portland St.), 416-979-1990, www.marbenrestaurant.com.
When: 9 p.m.
How much: $80 per person, $120 with wine pairings.
Hugh’s Room
Hugh’s Room fills up with jazz lovers looking to cut a rug after tucking into a hearty four-course meal. Chris Whitely and his five-piece band sell out the room each year by setting a nostalgic mood reminiscent of a ’40s black-tie affair.
Where: 2261 Dundas St. W. (at Roncesvalles Ave.), 416-531-6604, www.hughsroom.com.
When: doors at 7 p.m., show at 10 p.m.
How much: $110 per person.
Spice Route
The exotic surroundings and 15-course New Year’s menu make for a swank pan-Asian gastronomic journey that includes tempura banana, Vietnamese pork sausage and dim sum. DJ Nick Fiorucci’s house and lounge music provides the soundtrack for a much-needed post-feast workout on the dance floor.
Where: 499 King St. W. (at Spadina), 416-849-1808, www.spiceroute.ca.
When: first seating 7 p.m., second seating 9 p.m.
How much: first seating $60 per person, second seating $90 per person (includes champagne).
L’Unità
The stylish yet casual Av and Dav destination works its divine red wine risotto into a five-course menu that also features wild boar pansotti and seared Quebec foie gras. As the clock winds down, order a glass of franciacorta, Italian-style sparkling wine that reflects L’Unità’s culinary origins.
Where: 134 Avenue Rd. (at Davenport Rd.), 416-964-8686, www.lunita.ca.
When: first seating 6 p.m., second seating 8:30 p.m.
How much: $85 per person.
