TIFF Feature
Moving Pictures
Looking to prolong that TIFF feeling? The city’s many alternative and repertory movie venues sate the appetites of eager cinephiles most nights of the year. Here are the prime haunts
BLOOR CINEMA
This Annex fixture is the grand old belle of Toronto cinemas. With its huge balcony, the
Bloor is capable of accommodating the crowds attracted by the gala openings of the Images
and Reel Asian fests, as well as a program of first- and second-run titles.
Where: 506 Bloor St. W., 416-516-2331.
How much: $4–$10.
CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO
TIFF’s year-round screening program offers an impressively wide variety of international
films. In recent programs, the Cinematheque has mounted retrospectives on such auteurs
as Roberto Rossellini and Ken Loach, while also providing cineastes with limited runs
of the latest art house sensations.
Where: Jackman Hall, Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas St. W., 416-968-3456.
How much: $10.14–$11.56; members $5.90–$7.08.
NFB MEDIATHEQUE
Media stations on the first floor offer personal screenings of vintage docs from the vaults of the National Film Board of Canada, as well as such Oscar-winning animated shorts as The Danish Poet. Upstairs, the John Spotton Cinema hosts a diverse slate of films, many presented free of charge.
Where: 150 John St., 416-973-3012.
How much: prices vary.
PLEASURE DOME
This experimental series takes patrons down into
cinema’s true underground. Screenings—of everything from Donigan Cumming to Bruce LaBruce—often occur at Cinecycle, an endearingly ramshackle theatre behind the 401 Richmond building that
doubles as a bicycle garage.
Where: various venues, 416-656-5577.
How much: $5; members $2.
THE ROYAL
Much missed when the Festival Cinemas chain shut down in 2006, it made a grand return later that year, in better shape than ever. The Royal is a favourite venue for Hot Docs, Cinefranco and other festivals, when the screen isn’t occupied by such recent releases as David Lynch’s Inland Empire.
Where: 608 College St., 416-534-5252.
How much: prices vary.
