The Place: Mildred’s eight-month-old home in Liberty Village offers a sleek, if sterile, open dining room with polished concrete, high ceilings and white leather chairs. A recently added patio easily rivals that of nearby School Bakery and Café. Tip: sit facing north for a quiet urban view punctuated by GO Trains, south for people watching.

The Crowd: Rosedale sweater sets still make the commute to the “new” Mildred’s, but the patio also draws Liberty Villagers. Casually expensive outfits fill the seats and conversation tends towards not-quite-muted commentary on square footage, cottages and cars.

The Deal: On weekdays between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., Temple Kitchen’s “quickie” lunch is served: soup, sandwich and a sweet for $15. (Every day, Mildred’s releases the daily special on its Twitter feed.) The deal comes with a 45-minute guarantee (that’s the quickie part), backed by the promise of a free copy of the chef Donna Dooher’s Out to Brunch cookbook should lunch run long.

The Dish: On the Thursday we visited, Temple’s quickie menu was crispy corn fritters in soup, followed by veal brisket with melted Quebec cheddar, stacked on a brioche bun, and plated with a pecan square. The fritters add texture to the soup, while the veal brisket is succulent and saucy, the brioche refreshingly soft, and the pecan square pure gooey treacle. It’s a difficult deal to top: delicious food, prepared well and fast, for less than the price of a salami pie at Pizzeria Libretto.

The Time: Mildred’s will have to part with few cookbooks. Ten minutes pass between our arrival and the soup hitting the table, and the main dish turns up within seconds of the starter’s completion. Our lunch fits in the 45-minute window, with a few moments to spare.

The Cost: $28, including quickie lunch, cranberry juice ($3.50), americano ($2.75), tax and tip.

  1. I am a food fanatic and I'm always searching the internet for food ideas. I love my hamburgers the most of course . Can anybody suggest some variations of burgers?
