The place: The long-standing Mississauga favourite Miga BBQ has taken over the massive space left by McDonald’s at Markham and Bloor Street West. Colossal booths of jade green leather are consistently packed with diners grilling their own meat or communing over Korean stone bowls and Japanese bento boxes.

The crowd: The endorsement of club kids doesn’t have the same credibility as that of Korean parents—thankfully, Miga has tables full of the latter. (The former prefer the middling all-you-can-eat Korean spots just west of here.)

The deal: The server graciously mentions the lunch special (main, soup and salad for $10), but we can’t resist the tabletop grill. Our inner cave dweller opts for two cuts of beef short ribs: boneless ($25) and L.A. style ($20).

The dish: Complimentary miso and pan chan (the traditional small dishes served with Korean meals) precede the mains. Of the dishes, the lush rapini is notably flavourful. Our server cuts the rich marinated beef at the table and starts a few pieces on the grill (“Enjoy your lunch. I will support you”). The rib meat is perfectly chewy, sweet and tender; fresh-off-the-grill juices saturate the rice. Tea is served throughout the meal, but a fresh pot arrives at the close, to help, we are told, with digestion.

The time: 62 minutes of grilling fun.

The cost: $53.88 for two, including tip. Two meat dishes are too much for two people, so we took most of the L.A. ribs to go.

  1. I'm sorry to say that Miga's food barely ranks average as their overly sweet, MSG laden marinade for Kalbi and Bulgogi are atrociously priced at $53.88 for two.
