Meet Thy Maker

Farmers are the new celebrity dinner guests By Eric Vellend

Our compulsion to track the origins of everything we eat has turned farmers into cult heroes. They are, after all, the ones who can save us from the melamine-laced global food supply. To sate our appetite for all things agri, locavore restaurants are hosting regular meet-the-farmer nights, during which producers hold forth on such heady topics as organic pest control. Here, four ways to put a face to your food.

C5
Chef Ted Corrado pairs a guest chef with a featured farmer and vintner. This month, Tawfik Shehata of Vertical takes inspiration from the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit. Four-course dinner with wine $95. 100 Queen’s Park, 416-586-7928.

COWBELL
The September feast is a shining example of sustainability: Niagara vintner Moray Tawse will be pouring his wines while chef Mark Cutrara cooks the lambs that prune Tawse’s biodynamic vineyards. Five courses with wine pairings $140. 1564 Queen St. W., 416-849-1095.

GILEAD CAFÉ
As soon as Jamie Kennedy finishes prepping the meal (cold-smoked whitefish with fennel and onion salad, say, or ham on sour cabbage grissini), he joins guests at the harvest table, along with a roster of fruit foragers, cheesemakers and vinegar artisans. Four courses $60. 4 Gilead Pl., 647-288-0680.

GLADSTONE HOTEL
Once a month, chef Marc Breton invites his favourite suppliers (Chick-a-Biddy Acres and Scotch Mountain meats, to name two) to a cocktail party, where he serves up eco-friendly canapés. $17.50 with beer and wine. 1214 Queen St. W., 416-531-4635.
