Just when you thought it was safe to throw away your Duran Duran albums, the decade that won’t die is back—again. The last ’80s fashion revival was only three years ago. This time around, the flamboyant look is more grown-up—think slick rock chick instead of pop tart, Pat Benatar as opposed to Cyndi Lauper. The current version incorporates minimalist black dressing, a hint of goth—thank you, the Sisters of Mercy—and a baggy, voluminous silhouette, enlivened by colourful accessories and makeup. Luckily, designers seem to have forgotten about shoulder pads.

The key component of the trend is the skinny leg, shown off by jeans (which look good even if you’re not skinny) or the quintessentially ’80s footless tights—worn as leggings (to mid-calf) under dresses, skirts and chunky sweaters. Several denim labels have latched on to the skinny trend, but for true ’80s style, opt for Miss Sixty’s J-Lot trousers, complete with zippers at the ankles ($239–$299). They come in everything from light blue to a black cotton twill (Miss Sixty/Energie, Yorkdale Shopping Centre, 3401 Dufferin St., 416-782-0518). As for leggings and tights, the Mondor label has you covered with a range of weights and juicy colours ($10–$40, Fashion Crimes).

It wouldn’t be the ’80s without saucy little ankle booties (which complement the leggings and skinny jeans). Go electric with Giuseppe Zanotti’s red patent leather–and–leopard print mix ($798, Browns) or cheap and chic with Nine West’s black ruched Paskel model ($225).

Capping off the boots and jeans, the baggy top is the ultimate symbol of ’80s style. The name of the game is big, loose sweaters (you can belt them to prove you have a waist) and sweater dresses. Not just for teens anymore, Le Château boasts a wide range of affordable sweatery frocks—the cowl neck in a chunky knit ($69.95) calls to mind MTV’s heyday. If you’re a true material girl, however, Louis Vuitton’s fall collection includes a dark and delicious scoop-neck sweater dress ($800).

Finally, pile on buckets of MAC’s saturated red Rockocco lipstick ($16.50) and dark Violet Femme nail polish ($12), and slap on some smudgy black Bad Gal eyeliner ($24, Sephora). Cue the Roxy Music and get ready to star in your own video.
