The List: Ron MacLean
Ten things the Hockey Night in Canada straight man can’t live without By Amy Verner
1. White nights. When my friends and I go out frolicking a little too heavily, we always make sure we get Mike Fabiano at White Shadow Limo Service (905-849‑1458) to drive us. We often order the 16-seat white bus. We made quite an impression at a Toronto Marlies game last year. I can’t say I’m proud of the state we were in, but we had fun.
2. Sporty skivvies. ExOfficio boxer briefs are stretchy and great for sports. They wash and dry in five minutes. I found mine at Hiker’s Haven (166 South Service Rd. E., Oakville, 905-273-6434).
3. Flashy wheels. I’m not a muscle car guy, but my wife, Cari, has a fire-engine red ’86 Ford Mustang Cobra, complete with T-roof and five-litre engine. We keep it in storage. It’s one of those things you think you should throw out, but I just can’t.
4. Fondue for two. Cari and I bring out the electric fondue pot at least a dozen times in the winter. Our recipe calls for 300 grams of emmenthal, 200 grams of gruyère and 100 grams of appenzeller, a little kirsch, white wine base, some garlic for rubbing the pot and some peppercorns. We use French loaf, or sometimes pumpernickel, for dipping.
5. My charm doll from Don Cherry. Four years ago, Don gave me a statue of an elf-like creature called a billiken. He found it in Kingston in 1952. The legend is that it brings good luck if you found it, and even more if you stole it.
6. Beer league hockey nights. I play for the Coyotes at Canlan Ice Sports Arena (2300 Cornwall Rd., Oakville, 905-845‑6989) on Mondays and the Black and Whites at Kinoak Arena (363 Warminster Dr., Oakville, 905-338‑4191) on Wednesdays. I look forward to the games more than Hockey Night in Canada.
7. Playing fetch. A Chuckit is a device you use to pick up and throw tennis balls for dogs. It’s essential for keeping our four-year-old schnauzer, Lewis, happy. It also keeps our hands clean and dry.
8. A good workout. I go to the gym at the Oakville Club (56 Water St., Oakville, 905-845-0231) two or three times a week. I do 90 minutes of weight training, rotating through different exercises under the supervision of a trainer. My nutrition is hopeless, but at least I try to stay active to compensate for it.
9. My favourite essayist. I have every book of essays Lewis Lapham has ever written. Lights, Camera, Democracy! is my Bible. Lapham wants us to be skeptical of authority. He holds the powerful to account—a touch I’d like to borrow.
10. Talking Heads onscreen. After the last guest has left a party at our house, I decompress with my Talking Heads Stop Making Sense DVD, directed by Jonathan Demme. The second song, “Heaven,” is my favourite.
