The Klein Effect
Anti-capitalist crusader Naomi Klein is still raging against the world’s Goliaths. Her latest target: arts slayer Harper and his band of bozos. Which made us wonder, how much world- altering has occurred as a result of her messianic missions? A trip down protest lane with the queen of conscientious objectors By Katy Pederson
2000
The cause: Klein attacks Nike
and other mega-brands in her
anti-branding bible No Logo.
The effect: Nike still rules the
athletic wear universe ($18 billion
in revenues last year), but Klein
gets points for engaging the MTV generation in a topic as boring
as branding.
2004
The cause: The staunch socialist slams neo-liberalism in The Take,
her doc about a gang of Argentinian factory workers struggling to survive their country’s economic meltdown.
The effect: The film is a festival
darling, and (bonus!) 10,000 factory workers become their own bosses.
2007
The cause: Klein goes on CNN to protest the “Bono-ization” of protest.
The effect: Bono’s celeb-soaked (Red) campaign raises over
$110 million to fight AIDS in Africa.
2007
The cause: Klein’s latest doorstop blasts Dubya and all leaders who use crisis situations to advance their evil agendas.
The effect: The Shock Doctrine
lacks No Logo’s pop cultural appeal, readability and, uh, logo.
