Gossip from around the city
Less than 48 hours before marrying his hip-hop sweetheart Beyoncé (she of the bootylicious backside) at an intimate ceremony in New York, rap mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter held one last hurrah in an unlikely city: Toronto. He was in town to do a show with Mary J. Blige at the ACC, and when it was over headed to Lobby on Bloor for an impromptu stag celebration. Not what you’d expect from a guy who once flew his fiancée to London in his private jet for a $1.3-million birthday bash. But even outside of film fest week (when the bar is one of five official venues that can serve until 4 a.m.), Lobby’s black-leather banquettes have been berthing more than their share of shapely celebrity asses. By all accounts, a good time was had by Jay-Z—who passed on the VIP section, opting to spend his night among the tube-topped, spray-tanned masses. According to a staffer, he cut loose and took his famous dance moves to a higher level: on top of his booth. But his bad-boy antics ended there. “He was a cool guy, really low key,” said the staffer, adding that the Jigga Man’s drink of choice was Belvedere vodka. Also at Lobby that night were local stickhandling legends Mats Sundin and Tie Domi. Staff say the stars and sports figures flock to Lobby for the anonymity factor. Funny, because the bar’s Web site features more celeb snaps than an issue of Us Weekly.—Jane Falco
