The List
JFK of Mstrkrft
Jesse F. Keeler, whose band is about to release a new album, tells us 10 things he can’t live without By Amy Verner
1. The Maple Leaf lounge
The band travels constantly, so it’s important to be able to check into the executive line. I hate to admit it, but Air Canada has the best member lounge and sometimes even takes good care of us. The Star Alliance Gold card is like the Willy Wonka golden ticket.
2. Vinyl
I still listen to records; I have about 2,000. When I was a kid, I learned about music by listening to my parents’ collection. I started buying records when I turned 15, always thinking about eventually passing them on to my kids.
3. Souz Dal
I’ve been trying to get Sid Dichter, the owner of Souz Dal (636 College St., 416‑537-1883), to let me buy a piece of his bar. He says it’s not worth anything. I asked whether he’d let me open one in Los Angeles, and he said no one would go. That’s the type of guy he is and probably the reason why it’s so awesome in there.
4. The Fountainhead
I have made all of my friends read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, unless I thought it would be lost on them. It is a strong catalyst behind everything I do in music and business.
5. Dawn of the Dead
I’m really nerdy about Dawn of the Dead. I used to have a TV at the foot of my bed, and when girls came over, I put it on to see if it scared them away. If they stuck around, they were cool.
6. My laptop
My MacBook is the centre of my existence. It’s the one computer in our DJ setup, and it’s how I keep in touch with my family and friends. I’ve repaired and replaced it a bunch of times, but it’s the same guts inside.
7. Marc Jacobs cologne
I laugh when someone comments that I smell good, because sometimes I don’t shower for days. Even if I smell horrible, my Marc Jacobs cologne fools people’s noses.
8. A slice from Pizza Gigi
I’ve been eating at Pizza Gigi (189 Harbord St., 416-535-4444) for 17 years.
I like the slice with green and black olives. I’ve literally watched the owners’ hair turn grey. If I’m not sure about a girl, I’ll let those dudes choose. Anytime I’ve gone against them, it hasn’t worked out.
9. Our studio
The Mstrkrft studio is in Moss Park, just south of Queen Street. It’s such a personal space, a safe place with no distractions. Sometimes we’re there 17 hours a day.
10. Sunday curry with the family
My family is from India, and every Sunday we visit my grandmother in Don Mills to eat her homemade curry.
I always take my daughter, Violet, to visit. It keeps me grounded, because nobody there gives a shit about what I do for a living.
