When you’re Charles “Club King” Khabouth, of Ultra Supper Club, This Is London and The Guvernment, taking over an already popular club (in this case King West’s hipster hot spot Loft), remodelling every square inch and successfully opening in the span of four weeks is not something out of the ordinary. For Khabouth, it’s all in a month’s work. Gone is the white-hot aesthetic of the former space, replaced by a rich, multi-textured decor inspired by the ’70s bachelor pad: chocolate brown suede walls, hand-printed designer wallpaper, cowhide upholstery. The young, well-heeled, laid-back clientele includes former Loft-goers and current Ultra regulars. On occasion, pro athletes, international DJs and Toronto’s own Miss Universe also drop in to sip French martinis ($12.50) and flirt above the sounds of ’80s pop and classic rock. Early arrival is essential on weekends, when lineups are commonplace.
Tip: The mouth-watering stone-baked pizza with creamy fontina, potato and double-smoked bacon ($13), prepared by chef Jonathon Lucas, a former sous at Prego, is available until 1 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to ward off impending hangovers.
