House Party

Kensington just got cooler. Again. By Courtney Shea

Concept: “Kensington is the new College,” claims owner Kim Bui, referring to the Augusta strip, home not just to her new bar, Augusta House, but also to hot hangs Supermarket, The Embassy, The Boat and Teranga. Bui’s second-floor saloon—spacious, simple and jam-packed—specializes in getting hipsters on their feet with monthly nights organized by various promoters: break beats on the second Saturday of every month, retro ’80s on the third, and so on.

Crowd: Habitués are local and low-key, at least at the start of the night. Not that you’d know it by the way they work the dance floor, sweaty American Apparel–clad shoulder to sweaty American Apparel–clad shoulder.

Cocktail: Drink specials get switched up as often as DJs. One evening might feature an inventive Long Island green tea recipe, the next shots of Jäger. Those looking for a non-traditional chaser—and good dance-party fuel—can opt for the kitchen’s pad Thai and curries, which Bui’s mom cooks into the wee hours.

Augusta House, 152A Augusta Ave., 416-977-8881. Monday to Sunday, 4 p.m.–2 a.m.
