Where to have your first meal of the New Year By Dory Carr-Harris
Truffles
Four Seasons Hotel, 21 Avenue Rd. (at Bloor St. W.), 416-963-6919
The elegant Four Seasons Hotel offers a lavish buffet at Truffles, which will serve its brunch in Windows, a special room on the 32nd floor. A variety of starters—arugula salad, for instance, with medjool dates and toasted almonds—nicely preface seared ahi tuna and cured char at the chilled seafood bar. Carving stations proffer venison loin, prime rib, mustard-glazed smoked ham, and seared scallops; mini-pizzas and chicken fingers keep the kids happy. Reservations required. Buffet $80, including a mimosa. Half-price for children six to 12.
Boom Breakfast & Co.
808 College St. (at Ossington Ave.), 416-534-3447
West-enders look no further. This Little Italy eatery’s Ultimate Crunchy French Toast ($6.89), served with ice cream and drizzled with chocolate and caramel, will give you a much-needed sugar rush after a draining New Year’s Eve. Those seeking a more refined meal opt for the Forestière Crêpe ($8.69), filled with grilled chicken, spinach, cheese and mushroom béchamel sauce. Many omelette and eggs Benny options, including the California Spamelette ($8.69)—egg whites, mushrooms and oven-roasted tomatoes, finished with guacamole and fresh fruit—are perfect for those intent on starting their slim-down resolution right away.
Epic
The Fairmont Royal York, 100 Front St. W. (at York St.), 416-860-5050
The restaurant’s buffet brunch is a foodie’s delight. Featured are a breads-and-spreads table; salads and soups; a cold fish station with smoked salmon, trout, shrimp and oysters; and a charcuterie board. Entrées include pink-peppercorn crusted halibut and veal tenderloin. A large selection of desserts is available, but the standout is the chocolate fountain. A live pianist sets the mood. Buffet $65 per person. Reservations required.
Three’s Company Cafe
673 Danforth Ave. (at Pape Ave.), 416-406-3233
This tiny nook serves up a super brunch, the perfect cure for a New Year’s Day hangover. A specialty is the “egg-spresso” ($6)—steamed scrambled eggs with fresh herbs and cheddar cheese. Those looking to fill up for the day will delight in the big breakfast ($11), with two eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, a grilled tomato and light, fluffy buttermilk pancakes. Eggs Benny ($6) gets a twist with a cheddar-cheese scone instead of the traditional English muffin. For a lighter option, try the Breakfast in a Glass ($6) fruit smoothie, complete with protein powder.
Kalendar

Kalendar is ideal for those who want to enjoy the first day of the year in style. The enticing menu, influenced by Italy and India, offers such starters as an orange and ginger carrot soup, and a mixed-greens salad (regular $6.95, large $8.95) of artichoke and palm hearts, sugar snap peas, grape tomatoes and mushrooms. Try the scroll (single $9.95, dinner $14.95), a crêpe-style roti filled with chicken breast, avocado, plum tomatoes, feta and herbed mayonnaise. Sweet options include French toast stuffed with banana, mango and cream cheese.
Hot House Cafe
35 Church St. (at Front St. E.), 416-366-7800
