Forget Tutus
This season, edge trumps tradition with a trio of red-hot mind-bending dances
Untitled
Four Seasons Centre
Nov. 25 to 29
The company: New York sensation Aszure Barton. Like a clever potted history of dance, her work spans genres
The content: Barton is big on collective creation and not so much on narrative. Voyeurism will be one theme
The fan club: Mikhail Baryshnikov, Karen Kain and New Yorkers (who like to forget Barton’s from Edmonton)
Why we'll go: Barton’s career is nearing the stratosphere. This National Ballet production is a last chance to say “I knew her when”
To Be Straight with You
Fleck Dance Theatre
Dec. 2 to 5
The company: DV8 Physical Theatre, home to all things sexy, gay and button-pushing. Past performers: a septuagenarian and a legless dancer
The content: The London company mines the usual preoccupations: intolerance, religion and sexuality
The fan club: Theatre geeks who just want to dance, haters of the straight and narrow
Why we'll go: It’s naughty. Tory MPs have complained about DV8 in the British Parliament
Blood
Enwave Theatre
Oct. 27 to Nov. 1
The company:The fast and furious Chimera Project. Hello, hard bodies and whipping limbs
The content: The intensity of city living. (Though it’s the threat of dancers putting out their eyes that really
gets our pulse racing)
The fan club: Queen West art types, goths, aspiring athletes
Why we'll go:This is a remount of last spring’s popular production, so it will likely be even better
