It’s quickly shaping up to be the season’s can’t-miss culinary event: on September 16, nearly 30 city chefs will pair with top artisanal food producers, wineries and brewers at the Don Valley Brick Works for an exceptionally tasty picnic in support of Evergreen and Slow Food Toronto. The roster includes Keith Froggett of Scaramouche, Cava’s Chris McDonald, Mathew Sutherland of Fat Cat and Michael Stadtländer of Eigensinn Farm, as well as produce from Cookstown Greens, Kawartha Ecological Growers and Cumbrae’s, among others. Tawse, Stratus, Norman Hardie and Closson Chase are among the participating wineries. In large part, the event is intended to turn city diners onto the benefits of eating fresh, local food that’s produced with integrity; Slow Food Toronto leader Paul DeCampo hopes it shines just as much light on farmers and artisanal producers as it does on the lineup of all-star chefs. But that hardly means it’ll be an earnest affair. “Whether or not it’s going to save the world is almost beside the point,” says DeCampo. “This is a revolution based on pleasure.”

Picnic at the Brick Works, Sept. 16, noon–5, tickets $95, 550 Bayview Ave., 416-596-1495, ext. 251.
