Double Take
TSN2, MTV2, a whole new CBC Radio 2— broadcast spinoffs are reaching pandemic proportions. Can you tell the difference between what’s old and what’s two? By Jennifer McDonald
CBC Radio 2
The tag line: “As interesting and adventurous
as what you have
on your iPod”
What’s new: A cooler Radio 2 (if you can call Michael Bublé cool). This fall, pop, blues and jazz supplanted Bach and Beethoven on the new 2, and die-hard classical fans—who staged a protest at CBC HQ—are still spitting blood over the switch.
TSN2
The tag line: “More games, more sports, more coverage”
What’s new: The TSN doppelgänger plays pretty much what you would expect: more sports. A huge relief for couch-dwelling mega-fans whose greatest woes include “What if
I want to watch football, but TSN1 is airing golf?”
MTV2
The tag line: ”For
people who like hot sauce on their pizza”
What’s new: Local fans of gross-out fare like Jackass and Crank Yankers need no longer get a satellite or cross the border. With the first three months free, MTV’s sib hopes to hook teenaged boys
on puke pranks ASAP.
