Devils’ Advocates

Le Petit Castor’s cheese-stuffed prunes are satanically sinful By Chris Johns

Devils on horseback, a dish that was invented in Victorian England (not exactly known for its great food) and reappeared in the ’70s (ditto), is once again a cause célèbre among the culinary cognoscenti. The renaissance started when avant-garde Brit chef Heston Blumenthal served them at his Hinds Head Hotel. Next they appeared at the Spotted Pig, Mario Batali’s Michelin-starred gastropub. Now they’re the hottest appetizer at the fashionable Le Petit Castor in Rosedale. LPC stuffs the prunes with Benedictine blue cheese and wraps them in thick slices of double-smoked bacon. The sweet, salty, smoky result is tasty as hell. $9.
Le Petit Castor, 1118 Yonge St. (at MacPherson Ave.), 416-968-7366.
