A bustling midtown midday spot, with hearty sandwiches and sweet pastries from the daughter of the Ace Bakery founders By Renée Suen

The place: Devin Connell, owner of midtown’s latest midday spot, knows her carbs—she’s the daughter of Ace Bakery founders—and she serves up hearty sandwiches, along with soups, salads and sweet pastries.

The crowd: The takeout line that snakes out the door is a perfect cross-section of the neighbourhood: professionals, socialites, private-school girls and fit thirty-somethings pushing designer strollers.

The deal: The small soup and sandwich combo ($8.25 or $10.95, depending on the sandwich).

The meal: The ode to Ontario produce begins with the maple syrup–kissed butternut squash soup—it’s a savoury belly-warmer with a hint of granny smith apple tang. Next up, the Asian-inspired tuna sandwich is a creative take on the lunch-box classic. White tuna is marinated in a wasabi-soy vinaigrette, layered with creamy avocado mousse and cool sliced cucumbers, and tucked into a chewy ciabatta roll (from Ace, of course). Strawberry jammies ($2.50), baked doughnuts swirled with strawberry jam, make for a sticky, homey finish.

The time: The bustling counter hands fill our order in less time than it takes us to choose a sandwich. After just 22 minutes, we’re brushing the crumbs from our shirts and heading back to the office.

The cost: $17.70, including tax and tip.

Delica Kitchen, 1440 Yonge St. (at St. Clair), 416-546-5408, delicakitchen.ca.
