Power Ball 8 brings together the bold, the beautiful and the blemished By Jason McBride
Power Ball, 2005
The city’s funkiest fundraiser and the art world’s official hello to summer, the Power Ball brings together thousands of artistes, scenesters, collectors and, yes, power-brokers to the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery ever year. The theme of this, the eighth edition of the event, is “gorgeously flawed,” a tip of the hat to less-than-perfect celebrities such as Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe (let’s not mention Nicole Richie). Expect therefore oodles of edginess and surprise—and tons of torn dresses, outsized ’dos and messed up makeup. Frenzy-whipping will be provided by Stink Mitt (Vancouver’s queens of cougar rock), Montreal’s Malajube, and local lights Kids On TV. Other entertainment comes courtesy of the Pillow Fight League, whose members plan to patrol the environs looking for trouble. A karaoke bar gives the extroverted and intoxicated the opportunity to show off their pipes. And, finally, a catwalk (courtesy of sponsor Holt Renfrew) will occupy the centre of the gallery; accompanying videocams beam footage of preening revellers to screens above. In short: everyone will be a star.
The Power Ball takes place at the Power Plant June 1. $160 (includes drinks and hors d’oeuvres). 231 Queens Quay W., 416-973-4000, www.thepowerplant.org.
